When 136 students collapsed at a Kompong Cham, Cambodia high school while standing at attention as a punishment for failing to show deference to the national flag, local police blamed the fainting spell on trees.
The explanation sounds like something out of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, where (spoiler alert) trees attack people with a deadly neurotoxin.
In this case, though, the trees allegedly struck by blocking the students’ access to oxygen. Heng Meng, police chief of the district where the school is located, elaborated:
“According to the hospital’s analysis, the reason why the students fainted is [because of] the huge tree in the school compound and the farmland surrounding the school, which absorbed the oxygen.”
Meng went on to say that the standing punishment couldn’t be blamed, because one of the teachers also felt dizzy and had trouble breathing.
Despite the fact that trees produce, rather than block, oxygen, authorities say they won’t charge the school’s director because the incident was “caused by nature.”

If trees start rebelling, then it could definitely wipe a lot of us out. If they just decide one day to start breathing backwards, we are so fucked! Maybe instead of alien invasion, we should be more afraid of a Plant Kingdom Uprise.
Heat and the fact that their knees were locked is a more likely cause of the fainting.

*Sigh* Those uneducated Americans... Plants also absorb oxygen! They need it for cellular respiration, but they take it only at night and it's only about 0.1 of what they produce during day...
