Yesterday, we reported that Anonymous had threatened to “extinguish” Sony if it didn’t retract its support of the internet piracy law in progress, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). As of this morning, a post on Geekosystem alerts us that Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Sony have all withdrawn their names from the SOPA supporters list.

You might say they DROPPED THE SOPA.

As interesting timing as it might appear, not every detail on the situation is clear. First of all, Sony removing its name from the supporters list doesn’t indicate that its support has actually been retracted. In fact, the music and video companies within Sony still remain on the list, while the gaming division, Sony Electronics, has made its official exit.

As for Nintendo and EA, while their names are indeed removed from the list, they are both partners of the Entertainment Software Association, a group still remaining on the list. This web of network association makes it hard to clarify which companies are actually offering their support for the bill.

As the post points out, the removal of one’s name doesn’t necessarily prove the drop in support. The high publicity that this law is receiving, with most being negative, might be proving too much for companies like Nintendo and Sony, who wish for as little bad publicity as possible, especially given what’s happened to Sony in the past year.

Do not know what SOPA is? Read on.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill expands the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Now before the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act.

The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who requests the court orders, the actions could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as PayPal from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime[from the 'US websites'? to US users? clarification needed], with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for 10 pieces of music or movies within six months[for uploaders, downloaders, or hosts? clarification needed]. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement. Proponents of the bill say it protects the intellectual property market and corresponding industry, jobs and revenue, and is necessary to bolster enforcement of copyright laws especially against foreign websites.Opponents say that it infringes on First Amendment rights, is Internet censorship, will cripple the Internet, and will threaten whistle-blowing and other free speech.

Awesome. :O I think they should give Nintendo a pass though as they've shown they have no idea how the internet actually works.

Zan@ They weren't attacking Nintendo yet. But if Nintendo watched the video maybe they thought that they'll be attacked eventually. Or they just stepped back because videos like those are bad for their publicity to some extent. And you make a good point lol.

Vii@ Indeed they wont xD Yeah it's funny that they mentioned JB

Ghal@ I wouldn't call them that but at least some of their subjects are good things worth fighting for. Also let it be clear their not targeting PSN but Sony's sites. Since it's not us the players who support SOPA.
